Germany made a confident start to their World Cup campaign with a 7-1 win over tournament debutants Curacao in Group E.
Felix Nmecha opened the scoring just six minutes in, but Germany were stunned when Livano Comenencia levelled with Curacao’s first ever World Cup goal.
For a country of 160,000 people, which is now the smallest to ever qualify for and score at the World Cup, it was a joyous occasion.
But before halftime, Germany’s lead was quickly recovered thanks to a header from Nico Schlotterbeck and a penalty from Havertz.
Joshua Kimmich’s threaded pass sent Jamal Musiala into the far corner just over a minute into the second half. Then, in the 68th minute, Florian Wirtz’s pass was flicked by Denis Undav to Nathaniel Brown, who hooked a volley into the bottom corner to give Germany another goal.
Undav and Havertz added goals in the second half of Germany’s easy performance, securing three points in their opening Group E match.
