In their first World Cup Group D match in Vancouver, Australia shocked Turkey 2-0 with goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe in each half.
Prior to the match at BC Place, Tony Popovic’s team was viewed as heavy underdogs, but they put on a disciplined performance to win just their sixth World Cup, with teenage goalie Patrick Beach emerging victorious.
The 22-year-old was given an unexpected competitive Socceroos debut in place of the more seasoned Mat Ryan, but he did not let his team down with a string of outstanding stops—eight, the most by any ‘keeper in the tournament so far—to frustrate Turkey. The best came when he tipped Abdulkerim Bardakci’s long-range strike on to the post to maintain his team’s narrow lead.
Metcalfe’s low drive from distance sealed the victory with 30 minutes remaining. Earlier, Watford striker Irankunda became Australia’s youngest World Cup scorer, finishing the first goal on the counter in the 27th minute with remarkable technique and poise.
Despite having 30 shots overall and 72% of the possession, Turkey was unable to get past the Australian defense, who cleared the ball 55 times during the match.
