Kylian Mbappe set the record on Saturday, but France did not win. For the time being.
After his second goal in his team’s third-place game against England in Miami Gardens, Florida, the French great became the all-time top scorer in World Cup history with 22 goals.
France lost 6-4 despite Mbappe’s efforts, as their attempt to rally from a 4-0 halftime hole was unsuccessful.
Mbappe surpassed the legendary Lionel Messi of Argentina with goals in the 48th and 66th minutes.
“I am simply trying to assist my side score every time,” Mbappe remarked following the game. “I believe it is good for legacy and when we stop (playing) to say that I was one of those players. It is undeniable that scoring that many goals in the World Cup elevates you to certain levels, but I would have preferred to not be the top scorer in history and play tomorrow’s (championship) match.” However, that is not the first thing that comes to mind today.”
Additionally, Mbappe has scored ten goals in this World Cup, two more than Messi in the Golden Boot competition. In Sunday’s final in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Messi’s team will play Spain, giving the Argentine star an opportunity to shatter both of Mbappe’s records.
Since Gerd Muller of West Germany in 1970, Mbappe is the first player to score ten goals in a World Cup.
